The Final Chapter

Back Cover

The 1960s were a turbulent time, with the Vietnam draft relentlessly pressing young men into service right after high school graduation. Many of my friends sought refuge in college to avoid the draft, but I lacked both the academic prowess and the financial means for higher education. Four months after graduation, I was summoned for my draft physical and given just two weeks to either enlist or be drafted into combat arms. Two days before the draft, I enlisted, embarking on an uncertain journey towards my future self.

Looking back, I can identify four pivotal stages that shaped who I would become:

- The US Army trained me as a Stenographer.

- Early in my Army service, I was recruited by the Army Security Agency, which trained me in Communications Electronics.

- The US Army funded both my undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland and my graduate degree at Troy University, further honing my skills in management and critical thinking and enhancing my ability to craft compelling narratives.

- Upon retiring from the US Army, Computer Sciences Corporation provided me with senior management training and placed me in a diverse number of various senior manager assignments.

Fate pushed and pulled me through these four stages of development, some of which I fiercely resisted but ultimately accepted. This process transformed me into the person I am today, easily adapting to old age and retirement despite the challenges of my 49 months of combat service and the personal flaws of my youth.

My God had a plan. My God is good.
